Growing Ontario’s Nuclear Advantage in Barrie-Innisfil

Canada has a storied history in the field of nuclear power. As the birthplace of the CANDU reactor, this province has been at the forefront of nuclear technology for decades. Today our world-class nuclear industry carries on that legacy, and is making great strides in emerging technological fields like the development of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), medical isotopes and more. Personally and professionally as MPP for Barrie-Innisfil, I am incredibly proud and supportive of the role nuclear power plays in our electricity grid, our economy and our future.

Ontario relies on nuclear power as the backbone of our electricity system. Nuclear facilities already provide about 60 per cent of the province’s electricity and provide a safe, reliable, competitively priced and emissions-free source of electricity. We are also expanding the already considerable capability of these facilities to power more homes and businesses through nuclear refurbishment programs at Darlington and Bruce Nuclear Generating stations. These projects are enabling Ontario’s nuclear supply chain to retool, expand its capabilities and reinforce its leading position in the global nuclear industry, creating a strong foundation to pursue further innovative technologies – like Small Modular Reactors.

Beyond the ability to provide safe, reliable and affordable power to homes and businesses across our great province, maintaining our leading role in emerging nuclear technology offers significant economic benefits. Most of Canada’s 76,000 jobs in the nuclear sector are right here in Ontario. Our government is working hand in hand with this sector because we have a shared vision- to make Ontario a global leader in new and emerging nuclear technology such as SMRs and life-saving medical isotopes. These fields represent tremendous opportunity for new jobs, new export opportunities and more economic potential for our province. Right here in Barrie-Innisfil, one of Ontario’s great nuclear supply chain partners, Brotech Precision CNC is contributing greatly to this Made-in-Ontario innovation while creating 50 jobs, for this community.

Brotech Precision CNC is renowned in the Candu nuclear sector for delivering the highest quality and most difficult parts such as shield plug assemblies, end fitting components, positioning assembly components, flow elements, and thumbtack assemblies.

“Year after year, it is becoming more obvious that nuclear is so important to Ontario. At Brotech we manufacture many components used in Candu reactors – in Canada and Morethroughout the world,” said Jerome Horowitz, President of Brotech Precision CNC Inc. “In the years to come, we are looking forward to being a part of the nuclear supply chain for the new Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) being developed. Ontario’s nuclear industry has something to offer the world and we’re proud to be part of it.”

Brotech Precision CNC Inc. is also proud to be part of the isotope supply chain, with their work being exported globally and helping support life-saving technology.

With our experienced nuclear operators, robust nuclear supply chain, world class workers, and long-standing expertise in the industry, we are uniquely positioned to support the development and deployment of cutting-edge nuclear technology in Barrie- Innisfil, Ontario, throughout Canada and globally.

Our government sees the potential for economic growth, new jobs, and a continued supply of reliable, safe, clean and affordable electricity. That’s why we will continue to support the nuclear industry and all that is has to offer for our great province. We’re underway on an exciting journey to Build Ontario, and grow our Nuclear Advantage. Together we will create jobs and offer greater prosperity to all Ontarians while making our communities better places to live, work and retire.
